04s-J2 JAPANESE: JA300

Akiko NAKAYAMA, et al. (International Student Center)

Objective
This course is designed for intermediate students to develop their four language skills further building on the foundation of their Japanese abilities which they already posses.

Course Description
Students are expected to be able to communicate with others more naturally in daily situations. The written language will be studied and students will be able to understand fairly complicated sentence structures.

Textbook
An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese, The Japan Times

Attendance Policy
Regular attendance to all classes is required. Being absent for one third or more of the classes will be considered as withdrawal from the course.

Grading
Grades will be calculated as follows:
1. Attendances/ in-class performance = 30%
2. Quizzes/ homework = 20%
3. Written tests = 30%
4. Oral Exam = 20%

This formula is not set in stone, and we will make allowances for other factors, such as overall improvement over the term of the course.

Currently we are developing a new Japanese Language Program. As a result of this development, four levels of a new Japanese language course will be offered from this semester on. Three classes a week will be offered for each level and students are required to attend all these classes. Students will be requested to sit for a placement test at the beginning of the semester and the levels will be designated according to the result of the test.
