Objective
This course is designed to develop the ability to:
1.Conduct academic activities in Japanese.
2.Understand familiar topics in Japanese society and discuss them with Japanese people.
3.Describe similar situations in their home societies in Japanese.

Course description
1. Students will form groups of several members and conduct small projects about familiar issues (Ex. Sports, TV program etc.) in current Japanese society or their home societies.
2. Students will be requested to conduct independent projects at the end of the semester Special presentation day will be set for this project.
3. Japanese visitors will join the classes and students will have interviews, discussions, and debates on the various topics with the visitors.
4. Regular kanji quizzes will be given to develop reading and writing skills.

Textbook
Materials will be provided in the classes.

Attendance Policy
Regular attendance to all classes is required. Being absent for one third or more of the classes will be considered as withdrawal from the course.

Grading
Grades will be calculated as follows:
1. Attendance/ in-class performance = 30%
2. Quizzes/ homework = 20%
3. Written tests = 30%
4.Oral Exam = 20%

This formula is not set in stone, and we will make allowances for other factors, such as overall improvement over the term of the course.

Currently we are developing a new Japanese Language Program. As a result of this development, four levels of a new Japanese language course will be offered from this semester on. Three classes a week will be offered for each level and students are required to attend all these classes. Students will be requested to sit for a placement test at the beginning of the semester and the levels will be designated according to the result of the test.
