Objective
This course is designed to teach the basic skills necessary for successful communication in both spoken and written academic situations. Students will master basic vocabulary (about 1,000 words) and grammar, and develop all four language skills. About 200 kanji will be introduced during the course. Regular small quizzes will be given after each lesson. Students will learn strategies to understand pertinent information. Students will also learn strategies to be a good listener and carry on a conversation effectively.

Course Description
After completing this course, in addition to improving their reading and writing skills, students will be able to:
1. Explain or give reasons
2. Offer/ accept help
3. Ask for/ give advice
4. Describe sequential activities
5. Ask for /state one's opinion
6. Forming conjectures about other people and events
7. Describe one's intentions
8. Talk About one's abilities and talents

Attendance Policy
Regular attendance to all classes is required. Being absent for one third or more of the classes will be considered as withdrawal from the course.

Grading
Grades will be calculated as follows:
1. Attendance/ in-class performance = 30%
2.Quizzes/ homework = 20%
3.Written tests = 30%
4.Oral Exam = 20%

This formula is not set in stone, and we will make allowances for other factors, such as overall improvement over the term of the course.

Currently we are developing a new Japanese Language Program. As a result of this development, four levels of a new Japanese language course will be offered from this semester on. Three classes a week will be offered for each level and students are required to attend all these classes. Students will be requested to sit for a placement test at the beginning of the semester and the levels will be designated according to the result of the test.
