Introduction to Materials Chemistry

Objective

   Almost all chemical materials are divided into three categories, organic, inorganic and hybrid materials. The function of each material is mainly derived from its structure and electronic property. Furthermore, a lot of materials consist of the highly-ordered assemblies of molecules and/or atoms. Therefore, to design new materials, we should first study on the materials chemistry focusing on the relationship between those structures and functions at the molecular or atom level. In this class, we will introduce a variety of nano-materials such as electronic device, polymer, catalyst, bio- and medical materials etc., and then discuss the mechanisms of those functions based on the chemical properties.

Course Content
   This class is an omnibus course. Fifteen professors will contribute to this class. Their specialties are physical, inorganic, organic and biological chemistries. Tentative tiles for each class are as follows:
