Objective
Requirement / Prerequisite
Students are encouraged to have some knowledge on at least one language besides English.
In addition to students who are interested in language and translation, Japanese students who wish to study in English are also welcomed.
Course Content
In this course, we will explore some of the key concepts and approaches in Translation Studies, which is the research field related to the study of theories and phenomena of translation.
We will begin by thinking about what would be the requirements for a good translation and move on to discuss the notion of equivalence in translation.
Then, we will explore some of the linguistic approaches to translation.
In the second half of the course, we will look at issues regarding translating different types of texts.
Students will be expected to discuss their thoughts on language, translation and cross-cultural communication.
Also, students will be encouraged to analyze translations by comparing them with the originals.
