Practicing "Education for International Understanding"

Objective
   This course gives you the knowledge about the history and development of "International Understanding" through the policies of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Based on the theory, we will discuss how to practice "Education for International Understanding."
   The aim of this course is to establish own identity and expand your awareness towards differences and similarities to live together with others. In order to help achieve it, your positive participation by expressing your views will be highly expected.

Course Schedule

    (1) Introduction
    (2) History of Education for International Understanding
    (3) Discuss: "Virtue," is it necessary to learn?
    (4) Discuss: What to include in history textbooks?
    (5) Discuss: Why education is important?
    (6) Discuss: How can we achieve peace through education?
    (7) Discuss: What should be taught in Education for International Understanding?
    (8) Discuss "Human Rights Education" and "Environmental Education"
    (9) Discuss: "Peace Education" and "Gender Equality"
    (10) Prepare for Presentation
    (11)-(14) Group Presentation
    (15) Test (30 minutes) and Feedback

Textbook and Reference
   The textbook will be "Education for International Understanding" (by Lucie-Mami Noor Nkake, International Bureau of Education.) You will have the copies when you register the course. Also, you will receive homework each week.
   Recommended reading is "Citizenship and Language Leaning" by Audrey Osler and Hugh Starkey ( 2005) and "Teachers, Human Rights and Diversity" by Audrey Osler (2008).

Grading
   Class attendance (25%)
   Participation (including submission of worksheet and homework) (25%)
   Presentation (25%)
   Final Test (25%)

   Please note if you miss more than 3 classes, you will not be able to pass the course.
