INNOVATIVE JAPANESE TECHNOLOGIES IN 3M-BASED
ENGINEERING

Tomoyuki KAKESHITA, et al. (School of Engineering)

Objective
This course studies innovative Japanese technologies that have drastically changed the world in the principal engineering fields: Mechanical, Materials, and Manufacturing (3M-based) Engineering. This series of lectures given by six professors is also concerned with the basic principles and backgrounds of their respective fields.

Lecture Outline
(1) RESEACH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNET AND SHAPE MEMORY MATERIALS IN JAPAN (Prof. KAKESHITA, Tomoyuki) Room number R2-323
The lecture deals with the permanent magnet and shape memory materials, which have been researched and developed in Japan. Also, a basic talk is given on the magnetism, magnetic properties and the martensitic transformation under high magnetic field and high pressure.
(2) ADVANCED CONTROL OF MACHANICAL SYSTEMS: RESERCH ACTIVITIES IN JAPAN (Associate Prof.OHTSUKA,Toshiyuki) Room number 811B(M1 building)
This lecture first describes the importance and key ideas of advanced control in the field of mechanical engineering. Then the lecture introduces some research activities in Japan, including industrial applications.
(3) LASER APPLIED MEASUREMENT IN NANOTECHNOLOGY (Assoc. Prof.TAKAYA, Yasuhiro) Room number 811B(M1 building)
It is impossible to manufacture almost any high-tech products without Nanotechnology. An introductory lecture is given on the technical essence of the laser applied measurements which are indispensable in establishing Nanotechnology.
(4) MECHANICS AND STRUCTURES: FROM CARBON NANOTUBE TO TRUSS STRUCTURE (Prof. SHIBUTANI, Yoji) Room number 811B(M1 building)
The topic of the carbon nanotube, which was discovered by Sumio Iijima of NEC Corp., is discussed here and its recent applications to the engineering field are especially emphasized.
(5) MATERIALS DEGRADATION -ITS ECONOMICAL BACKGROUND AND PROTECTION TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT ADVANCED INDUSTRIES (Prof. FUJIMOTO, Shinji) Room number R2-323 Dec./12, Dec./19
Materials degradation by environment is one of the most important problems in every industry. This lecture describes “Corrosion Cost in Japan” which is equivalent to more than 3% of GDP. The key technologies to prevent environmental degradation of metallic materials are also introduced in Automobile Fabrication, for instance.
(6) TREND IN HIGH EFFICIENCY WELDING AND JOINING PROCESS (Prof. HIRATA, Yoshinori) Room number R1-216 Jan./16, Jan./23
It is key-technology for surviving in global competition to make products with high efficiency welding and joining process invarious industries such as automobile, steel structures, shipbuilding and so on. This lecture provides an introduction of recent researches and developments for high efficiency welding and joining in Japan.
(7) Labo Tour 2

Grading
Presence + A test or report will be made in each class.
