MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN

Objective
This course concerns modern Japanese society and the mass media. Several aspects of Japanese media, such as film, newspaper and magazine journalism, broadcast (TV) media, and the Internet, will be studied. Also, students are expected to make short presentations about media situations in their own countries. Based on lectures and discussions, students will be asked to formulate ideas about the contribution of the mass media to the maintenance of 'democratic' societies, and the problems it faces.

Textbook
There will be no assigned textbook. Short reading materials will be distributed in class.
