99f-14 INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS IN A GLOBALIZING WORLD

Objective
We are living in an increasingly globalized world today. This couse will examine the effects of globalization on various (political, economic, cultural) aspects of contemporary international relations as well as provide basic knowledge on wide-ranging problems in the world today. Students will be encouraged to present their view on the issues and be stimulated by the view of others from different parts of the world in order to turn the class itself into "international relations in a globalizing world", which is a unique OUSSEP opportunity.

Textbook
There will be no assigned textbook. Short reading materials will be distributed in class.

Course Outline
Week 1.Introduction: what is globalization?
Week 2.Globalization of politics: humanitarian intervention
Week 3.Globalization of economy: world financial market
Week 4.Globalization of culture: Americanization

Topics for the following weeks:

Specific issues dealt with may be subject to change.
Each class will be started by an introductory lecture by the instructor, followd by open-floor discussion.
Previous knowledge on international relations is not required.

Assignment
Two papers (midterm and final, 5 to 10 pages each) on the issues discussed in class.
