Objective
Gain an understanding the essentials of ancient classic Japanese poetry. Discuss the meaning of the poems. Enjoy the beauty of ancient Japanese poetry. Listen to and understand the beauty of classic Japanese songs. Learn some Japanese from these songs.
Course Outline
We will read English translations of ancient Japanese poems, making use of NHK DVD material and discussing poetic topic and background. We will also read and listen to modern classic Japanese songs published from the 19th century.
Course Schedule
Thursday morning from the beginning of the semester, 15 classes.
Class 1 - 14 first half of class discussing Manyoshu, second half discussing Japanese songs

Class participation: attendance is required for 80 per cent of the classes (30 per cent weight
of evaluation)
