INNOVATIVE JAPANESE TECHNOLOGIES IN 3M-BASED ENGINEERING

Tomoyuki KAKESHITA, et al. (School of Engineering)

Objective
This course studies innovative Japanese technologies that have drastically changed the world in the principal engineering fields: Mechanical, Materials, and Manufacturing (3M-based) Engineering. This series of lectures given by six professors is also concerned with the basic principles and backgrounds
of their respective fields.

Lecture Outline
Room number R2-323 Apr./7, Apr./14
RESEACH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNET AND SHAPE MEMORY MATERIALS
IN JAPAN (Prof. KAKESHITA, Tomoyuki) The lecture deals with the permanent magnet and shape memory materials, which have been researched and developed in Japan. Also, a basic talk is given on the magnetism, magnetic properties and the martensitic transformation under high magnetic field and high pressure.

Room number 811B(M1 building) Apr./21, Apr./28
ADVANCED CONTROL OF MACHANICAL SYSTEMS: RESERCH ACTIVITIES IN JAPAN (Associate Prof. OHTSUKA,Toshiyuki) This lecture first describes the importance and key ideas of advanced control in the field of mechanical engineering. Then the lecture introduces some research activities in Japan, including industrial applications.

Room number 811B(M1 building) May/12, May/19
ECODESIGN: CURRENT AND FUTURE (Prof. UMEDA, Yasushi) In order to realize the sustainable society, environmentally conscious design of artifacts is getting increasingly important. This lecture gives an overview on the current ecodesign activities in Japan and emerging research issues.

Room number 811B(M1 building) May/26, Jun./2
LASER APPLIED MEASUREMENT IN NANOTECHNOLOGY (Prof. TAKAYA, Yasuhiro) It is impossible to manufacture almost any high-tech products without Nanotechnology. An introductory lecture is given on the technical essence of the laser applied measurements which are indispensable in establishing Nanotechnology.

Room number R2-323 Jun./9, Jun./16
MATERIALS DEGRADATION -ITS ECONOMICAL BACKGROUND AND PROTECTION TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT ADVANCED INDUSTRIES (Prof. FUJIMOTO, Shinji) Materials degradation by environment is one of the most important problems in every industry. This lecture describes “Corrosion Cost in Japan” which is equivalent to more than 3% of GDP. The key technologies to prevent environmental degradation of metallic materials are also introduced in Automobile Fabrication, for instance.

Room number R1-216 Jun./23, Jun./30
INTELLIGENT LASER PROCESSING SYSTEM (Associate Prof. OHMURA, Etsuji) In laser processing, not only process quality and process phenomena but also oscillator, output beam quality and optical system are very important. Furthermore theoretical analysis, computer simulation, in situ observation and measurement of various signals are also important. A laser processing system in which these functions are included is named "Intelligent Laser Processing System (ILPS)". In this lecture some studies aiming at construction of ILPS are introduced.

Lab Tour 2 Jul./7, Jul./14
