JAPAN IN AND OUT:
INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE CULTURE AND SOCIETY

Objective
This course will look into aspects of Japanese culture and society
in three parts. The first will deal with the Japanese social structure including
family and kinship and examine some key concepts such as seniority, verticality
and groupism.
The second part will focus on contemporary issues and
discuss topics such as changing family, male-female relationship, food ways and ostensible homogeneity.
The last part will offer an insight into the Japanese society by reviewing its
history of contact with outside world, i.e. Southeast Asia and Pacific
in particular. Some guest presentations by international students currently studying
at the Graduate School of Human Sciences will be arranged.

Evaluation
Grades will be based on a term paper as well as class attendance
and participation.
