Objective
Southeast Asia and Japan have been in close contact partly because of their geographical proximity. However, the relationship between the two had not always been smooth. In this course, we will discuss about the history of the contact between the Southeast Asia and Japan as well as the perceptions of both and their effects on each other.

Textbook
There will be no assigned textbook. Reading materials and/or references will be provided in each class.

3. Japan's contact with Southeast Asia: after WW II
- Resumption of the relationship between Japan and Southeast Asia at the initial stage of the Cold War
- War compensation to the countries in Southeast Asia
- How ODA started and developed?
- Regionalism of Southeast Asia and Japan: ASEAN, APEC and ARF
4. Japan's business investments and the economy of Southeast Asia
5. How Japanese see Southeast Asia?
6. How the Southeast Asian people see Japan?

Participation in class 40%
Term paper 60%
