EXOTIC PROPERTIES OF ELECTRONS

Norio KAWAKAMI, et al. (Faculty of Engineering)

Objective
This course contains a series of the lectures on exotic properties of electrons. The lectures are given by the professors who are actively working in the fields of condensed matter physics, surface physics, etc. Fundamental properties of electrons and their applications are described in detail for the following subjects.

Textbook
No particular textbook is used.

Teaching Schedule
Prof. KAWAKAMI, Norio
FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF ELECTRONS
An introductory lecture on quantum mechanics is given, from which various exotic properties of electrons naturally follow. Some remarkable phenomena of electrons are then reviewed for selected topics in condensed matter physics, such as the mesoscopic physics in semiconductors, etc.

Prof. HANGYO, Masanori
SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND ITS APPLICATIONS
Superconductivity is a very mysterious phenomenon in the field of solid state physics. Basic properties of the superconductors and the mechanism of superconductivity are introduced together with their applications.

Prof. KASAI, Hideaki
ELEMENTARY PROCESSES IN EXCITATIONS AND REACTIONS AT SURFACES AND INTERFACES
The fundamental nature of electronically induced dynamics at surfaces and inter aces is explored. Attempts are made to reveal various aspects of elementary processes in excitations and relations at surfaces and interfaces by introducing the experimental and theoretical developments made in this field.

Prof. TAKAI, Yoshizo
ELECTRON DIFFRACTION AND IMAGES
Electron diffraction and imaging techniques are very important for atomic level characterization both in biological and physics-chemical domains. In the lecture, the theories, techniques and applications of electron diffraction and electron microscopy are comprehensively reviewed.

Grading
Grading is based on participation and report
